Yellow Mountain Climbing Paths
Practical climbing experience from a tourist

The Yellow Mountains or Mount Huangshan is perhaps the most beautiful mountain I have ever seen. The majestic beauty of the mountains certainly took our breath away after a 3 and 1/2 hours climb up. To truly enjoy Huangshan, I would say climbing up would reap the most reward as you would truly savour the beauty that greets you when you reach the top.

There are two directions to climb. Either from the back of the mountains or Eastern steps or the more scenic route of the Western step or the front of the mountains. However, be warned, the Western steps route would take about 5 to 6 hours depending on your speed.

My friends and I chose the Eastern steps to begin our ascent of Huangshan so as to have enough energy to enjoy Huangshan when we eventually reach the peak. With lots of stops, we finally reached the cable car station which is located at the top in 3 1/2 hours. Yes, there is a cable car option. But during the peak season, people were known to be queuing for at least 2 hours.

There are now 3 decent hotels on Huangshan, with Shilin Hotel being the newest to open when I was there. The other two are Beihai Hotel (the oldest one) and Xihai Hotel. Shilin Hotel is about 5 minutes walk from Beihai Hotel. Beihai and Shilin are good as they are near where you have to go to see the sun rise while Xihai Hotel is said to have better service. Simply breathtaking when the sun peaks out from the mountains. If you are lucky and there are clouds, the sun rise is supposed to be even more spectacular!
