Tiger Mountain Great Wall

The construction of defensive walls has a long history in China. Early in the Spring and Autumn Period, every state was active in building protective walls against their enemies. Yan State was no exception. As it was one of the seven powerful warring states at the time. The western region of today's Liaoning Province is proved to be under the jurisdiction of Yan State, so here one can find many relics of the wall. The wall of Yan State in Jianping County is said to be the earliest wall in Liaoning, which was originally called "earth dragon" or the "stone dragon" by the local inhabitants.

The wall construction didn't end with the following dynasties. Qin, Han, Northern Qi, Liao and Ming Dynasties all put substantial labor and money into the wall construction, which made Liaoning an area full of wall resource. The known walls in this region measure 2,350 kilometers (1,460 miles), Liaoning is proud to have the easternmost part of Great Wall, the Hushan Great Wall. This is a recent discovery in Chinese archaeological history, to widespread surprise, as it repudiates the earlier theory that considered Shanhaiguan Pass as the easternmost section of the Great Wall.

Most of today's walls in Liaoning are but historical ruins, scattered across the mountains and towns. In order to salvage these precious historical remains, Chinese government spares no effort to restore and protect them, with the hope of retaining their ancient and important magnificence.

Hushan - 'Tiger Mountain' in English, is so named because the two towering peaks are like two tiger ears pricking up into the sky. It covers an area of four square kilometers (1.54 square miles) and its main peak measures 146.3 meters (1,080 feet). In history, Hushan was always regarded as an important fortress because it guarded the safety of Dandong City and is the eastern gate way to China. So logic dictated that a wall along Hushan Mountain be built to take up the commanding heights.

The Tiger Mountain lies on the bank of the Yalu River which is 15 kilometers' distance away from the east of Dandong City. It is one of the important scenic spots of the Yalu River Scenic Spot, facing the Red Island and Yizhou, an old city of Korea, across the River.

The Ming Dynasty Great Wall lies on the Mountain just like a big dragon. The Riverside Road at the foot of the Mountain is connected with the 201 national Road. The Bangshan Platform on the Riverside is the east starting point of the Great Wall. Around the Tiger Mountain, there are ruins of West Anping County built in Han Dynasty and ruins of the old battlefield of the war between China and Japan and between China and Russia.

The area of the Tiger Mountain is 4 square kilometers. The main peak in the Mountain is 146.3 meters’ high. At the top of the peak is the first beacon tower of the Great Wall. Looking around on the beacon tower, you can clearly see Korea’s Yizhou City, the sea beach in Ma City, China, and the Yalu River Bridge that connects Dandong and Sinuiju.

The beautiful surroundings of the Tiger Mountain made it one of the eight famous scenic spots in Andong in the early years. There are 28 scenic spots such as the Great Wall, the Sleeping Buddha, and the Cliff on the mouth of the Tiger Mountain and so on, which are the best tourist attractions in Dandong’s suburb.

The Hushan Great Wall, lying on the Yalu River, 20 kilometers (12 miles) from Dandong City, Liaoning Province, and facing North Korea across the river, was built to strengthen the frontier defense in the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644) and was the eastern starting point of the ten thousand li Great Wall. However, due to the collapse of many parts of its structure, people took Shanhaiguan Pass to be the eastern-most point of the Great Wall. The excavation of 600-meters (0.4 miles) of ruins in 1989 proved it to be the real one. In 1992, the government invested a huge amount of money to restore this section of the wall. The renovation of 1,000 meters (0.6 miles) of the principal part was completed in 2000.

The Tiger Mountain, which is still being built, is surrounded by clear waters. The Great Wall runs up and down along the Mountain. The yachts that shuttle around the Mountain and lake directly get to the Yalu River. Trees and flowers invert their reflection in the water. The scenery here is as beautiful as a painting. The Folk Custom Village, the Frontier Trade Market, the Great Wall Museum and the Food Street are going to be built here. Approved by the country, people are restoring the Great Wall on the Tiger Mountain and have completed over 730 meters’ long. Before long, the riverside sightseeing road will lead to the Tiger Mountain Scenic Spot directly. It will only take people about ten minutes to arrive there. The Tiger Mountain in the future will be deep in visitors’ good graces as a tourist area where people can go sight-seeing, entertain themselves, spend their holidays and make scientific researches.
