The Three Gorges on the Yangtze River

Originating in the Qinghai Highland, the 6,300-kilometer long Changjiang (Yangtze) River, the longest in China and one of the longest in the world, sweeps from west to east through eight provinces and one municipality. When it reaches the eastern Sichuan Basin in southwest China it cuts through the Wushan Mountains bordering Sichuan and Hubei provinces. Here the river course suddenly narrows and the waters become turbulent. Sheer cliffs and steep mountains rise on either side, creating one of nature's most fantastic sights, the Three Changjiang River Gorges-the Qutang, the Wuxia and the Xiling, which extend from Fengjie in the west to Yichang in the east, a total of 193 kilometers.
